150 years celebration for Kershaws garden centre

A Garden centre has marked an amazing milestone —150 years of trading.

Kershaws Garden Centre in Brighouse was established as a nursery in 1864 and staff celebrated with customers on Saturday with a series of activities.

Mark Yates, manager, said: “It’s a special weekend for us, I don’t think many people realise how long we’ve been her for.”

It all started when the Kershaw family acquired what was known as Slead Syke Nurseries back in 1864.

In 1929 the nursery changed hands and was taken over by Yates Seeds and Mark is the third generation of his family to take the helm and it’s still a family-run business.

On Saturday they fun got under way from 10am, with donkey trips, face-painting, fudge-tasting and the unveiling of a special cake made by Brighouse baker Maria Webster. There was also a family treasure hunt and entertainment by Kirklees Music brass band over the weekend.

The event also raised funds for Overgate Hospice, which cares for people with terminal illnesses.

The business is a member of the Brighouse Business Initiative and helps organise many town centre events and also works with local schools for the In Bloom competition.
