Dobbies Garden Centres suffered a fall in profits during the year to 26 February, a period which included the sale of the retail chain by its former owner Tesco. Now owned by a group of investors led by Midlothian Capital Partners and Hattington Capital, Dobbies posted a pre-tax profit of £8.4m in its latest financial year on revenues £151m. That compared to £14.5m on turnover of £153.7m the previous year. There was no beating about the bush when a Greenock primary school asked Cardwell Garden Centre for help. The bosses at the garden centre, near Gourock, immediately agreed to supply apple and plum trees, blueberry and blackberry bushes, along with compost to youngsters at King’s Oak School. The King’s Oak Parent Circle had contacted Cardwell asking for bushes and trees they could plant in their new garden project in the school playground. Father Christmas is having a new home built following a blaze at his grotto at Notcutts garden centre in Woodbridge. The company has confirmed that all ‘Santa experiences’, where children can meet him face-to-face over breakfast or tea, will go ahead as planned following the fire on Sunday afternoon. Notcutts chiefs said his grotto would be closed until further notice, although staff were working hard to rebuild it. Firefighters have extinguished a blaze that took hold of a marquee used as Santa’s grotto at a Suffolk garden centre today. Crews from Suffolk Fire and Rescue Service used two jets to douse the flames during the incident at Notcutts in Ipswich Road, Woodbridge around 3.30pm. Video footage taken by a member of the public at the scene shows smoke billowing into the sky and three people dressed as Father Christmas and elves in the area.
