Dobbies profits fall

Dobbies Garden Centres suffered a fall in profits during the year to 26 February, a period which included the sale of the retail chain by its former owner Tesco. Now owned by a group of investors led by Midlothian Capital Partners and Hattington Capital, Dobbies posted a pre-tax profit of £8.4m in its latest financial year on revenues £151m. That compared to £14.5m on turnover of £153.7m the previous year. In accounts now filed with Companies House, Dobbies noted that the sale of the business in July 2016 included special dividends of £7.5m paid to Tesco as part of the process. The sale resulted…

Rosebank Garden Centre, based in the Clyde Valley, were this week contacted by the film giant’s legal team regarding their wizard themed scene. The bosses at the garden centre, near Gourock, immediately agreed to supply apple and plum trees, blueberry and blackberry bushes, along with compost to youngsters at King’s Oak School. Father Christmas is having a new home built following a blaze at his grotto at Notcutts garden centre in Woodbridge. The company has confirmed that all ‘Santa experiences’, where children can meet him face-to-face over breakfast or tea, will go ahead as planned following the fire on Sunday afternoon. Notcutts chiefs said his grotto would be closed until further notice, although staff were working hard to rebuild it. Firefighters have extinguished a blaze that took hold of a marquee used as Santa’s grotto at a Suffolk garden centre today. Crews from Suffolk Fire and Rescue Service used two jets to douse the flames during the incident at Notcutts in Ipswich Road, Woodbridge around 3.30pm. Video footage taken by a member of the public at the scene shows smoke billowing into the sky and three people dressed as Father Christmas and elves in the area. An assistant manager at a garden centre has been jailed for fraud after deceiving innocent members of the public into buying stolen garden machinery during a seven-year scam. Philip Smith, 38, of New Road, Chilworth, was working at the Cranleigh Garden Machinery store at Notcutts Garden Centre where he had sole responsibility for stock control. Police say that over a seven year period Smith ordered numerous lawnmowers on the company accounts and then deliberately altered the amounts in company records to make it look like only a number of them had actually been delivered. Carnival prince and princess, Frazer Foley and Chloe Winterbone, along with their attendants, joined Santa to cut the ribbon to officially open his grotto at Wyevale Garden Centre on Saturday, 18 November. A popular Worcestershire Christmas attraction was targeted by a gang of ram raiding thugs. Webbs Garden Centre in Worcester Road, Wychbold, Droitwich, was struck by at least four offenders who used a stolen vehicle to force their way into the site to gain access to a cash machine. But the machine was empty. The stolen Hilux vehicle from the Tewkesbury area was left at the scene. The crime took place at about 11.30pm on Tuesday, November 28. The garden centre’s main doors have been replaced with temporary doors and visitors were being asked to use an alternative door this morning. source
