Garden centres pray for better weather as sales slide

garden centres

The UK’s garden centres are suffering after the country’s spate of bad weather, with sales at their worst levels in at least five years. So far this year, average underlying sales are down 15% to 20%, with the early Easter proving a washout, says the Garden Centre Association. Now the horticulture industry is hoping for brighter late spring weather. “It’s literally in the lap of the gods,” said the association’s chief executive, Iain Wylie. He told the BBC that people were not coming in to buy flowers and other plants because of unfavourable conditions in their often waterlogged gardens. “We…

garden centre

A family who have been running a garden centre for 60 years have been left “devastated” after their trusted office manager took more than £30,000. Ian McDonald, director of Abergavenny Garden Centre in Llanfoist, said Zena Price betrayed his trust and her offending had a direct impact on the small family-run business. In a victim impact statement read out at Cardiff Crown Court, he said: “I feel personally devastated as I had full confidence and trust in her.” The court heard 37-year-old Price conned her employers out of £32,021.92 over a three-year period. Nuhu Gobir, prosecuting, said she was employed in April 2014…
