First garden centre wins National Store of the Year

Arboretum Home and Garden Heaven has recently been named Ireland’s National Store of the Year 2015.  This is the first time a garden centre has won such an honour.

The business in Leighlinbridge, Co Carlow, has been built up by the Doyle family into one of Ireland’s largest with sales of 6m Euro.

The group has now agreed in principle to buy a second garden centre, the National Garden Exhibition Centre in Kilquade, Co Wicklow.  The deal is expected to complete on 31st March.

Arboretum are buying the vacant freehold of the property which has been closed since Christmas.  They hope to get early access under licence so they can prepare to resume trading in April.

The National Garden Exhibition Centre is famous for its 20 exhibition gardens.  Fergal Doyle sees these as a major draw to what will be a plant based garden centre within reach of Dublin.  The other major draw will be the café.

The company says it will spend 2m Euro to buy the new garden centre and get it trading.  It then hopes to invest a similar amount on improving and extending the site.
