Over forty members of staff from the Haskins Garden Centre in Ferndown have signed up to become Dementia Friends.
Staff signed up after Ruth Crosland, a Dementia Friends volunteer from the Alzheimer’s Society, gave a presentation about the scheme.
Ruth Crosland said: “People with dementia want to carry on going about their daily lives and feeling included in their local community, but they sometimes need a helping hand to do so.
“Dementia Friends learn a little bit about what it’s like to live with dementia and turns that understanding into action.
The staff can now wear their forget-me-not badges and improve awareness in the local community with the information they learned from the presentation sessions.
Joolz Walford, Customer Services Manager at Haskins, said the staff would be able to apply their knowledge when serving customers who may have milder forms of dementia and offer the individuals more support and understanding during their time at the centre.
Haskins Staff has nominated the Alzheimer’s Society as their charity of the year.
